Overview
The program focused on HIV technical areas both at health facility and community levels. The technical areas include HIV Testing and Counseling (with particular attention to provider initiated testing and counseling); Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission of HIV; Adult and Pediatric Care and Treatment; Tuberculosis and HIV testing and treatment; and Prevention with Positives.
Objectives of the Chagua MaishaProgram included:

1. Increased quality, access and utilization of HIV prevention services at community and facility.

2. Increased quality, access and utilization of HIV care and treatment at the community and facility.
​
​
3. Strengthened capacity of indigenous institutions, and the Kenya Ministry of Health to implement HIV services.
Chagua Maisha supported achievement of measurable and sustainable contributions towards the Government of Kenya’s goals, including the Kenya National AIDS Strategic and the global “3-12-12” goals of PEPFAR.
The program goal was to sustain and enhance achievements made in scale up and quality, maximize opportunities to support a reduction in HIV infections and improve the quality of life of individuals, families and communities in Kisii County.
Types of Services
The program used an integrated Community/Facility Model that employed the following cross cutting strategies:
1.
Capacity building for both strategic indigenous institutions and individual service providers
2.
Mobilization and sensitization to increase uptake and utilization of HIV services
3.
Partnerships with the line government ministries, private institutions, development agencies and the community
4.
Linkages and referrals within and across health facilities, and between health facilities and the community
5.
Monitoring and Evaluation, data and information systems strengthening
6.
Organizational development to strengthen technical and managerial capacity of local institutions to implement HIV interventions
