Who We Are

CARE Kenya is part of CARE International, which works in over 100 countries to fight poverty.

CARE History

The Start

Care International has been around for over 75 years. Starting as a CARE package during World War 2, CARE now works in over 100 countries looking for long-term solutions to poverty.

Originally, Americans paid $10 to send a ‘CARE package’, containing food and supplies, to someone in Europe.

From Europe to Everywhere

With Europe on the road to recovery, CARE found itself increasingly involved in Asia and Latin America providing supplies to war-torn areas.

Change of Method

CARE reaches Africa, and expands its offerings beyond immediate and short-term relief to more long-term assistance in the form of recovery and rehabilitation.

CARE was on of the first organisations to set up base after Kenyan Independence in 1963.

New Programs

CARE’s longer-term development programs increasingly began focusing on ways to improve the status of women, and encourage their greater participation.

Name Change

In 1993, in an effort to reflect the wider scope of our programs and impact, CARE changed the meaning of its acronym to “Cooperative for Assistance and Relief Everywhere”.

The new Millennium

In the new millennium, CARE solidified its position as a leader in areas such as agriculture, education including for girls, health and community well-being, small-scale entrepreneurial activity, improving water sanitation, and making women’s empowerment core to all it’s approaches to defeat poverty.

2021

CARE’s understanding of poverty has grown over decades of experience, helping us to address poverty’s root causes. We now reach over 90 million people in over 100 countries.

CARE Kenya Strategic Goal

To enable 5.5 million at risk and excluded people overcome poverty and social injustice by 2030.

By 2030, CARE International hopes to support over 200 million people from at risk communities to overcome poverty.
